Default Pintle Hitch Tow Ring

I made this ring for the dump box trailer/pusher that I am making. I thought some would find the process in used to make this interesting.

I have (or had) a bending jig to form a ring like this but I cannot find it. Rather than make another jig and source steel rod that I did not have I decided to use a piece of 1” HR plate left over from another project.

A technologically advanced society would teach their children how to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together before teaching them how to use a lighter.

Aren't energy consumption and computers supposed to make life less stressful?

If you are not having fun then you are doing it wrong.

After laying out the trim lines on the surface I used a hole saw to rough out the hole. A boring bar was then used to size the hole to 2.5”

Here I am using a 1/2” corner radius cutter to shape the inside of the hole. The cutter was secured in the boring head so one cutting edge made contact with the work.

The outside was cut using the same corner radius cutter. For this, the cutter was placed in the spindle as normally used. The Z height remained constant while I moved both X and Y axis as needed to make a series of cuts around the outside.

Covering the surface with layout dye helped provide contrast for this sight milling. Placement of a work light also proved to be very helpful. A light behind the cutter in the right spot made seeing the cutting depth easy. I was able to proceed without having to move the tool out of the way to check my progress.

Working around the ring moving the light as needed.

I have the quill completely raised on the machine. This eased the strain on my neck and back a bit.

Not shown in this picture is the layout dye that I added before I took the grinding disk to it. The dye here was not as helpful as when cutting on the mill but the cost was low.

Yes, well done. More of a machining thread but heck, metal carving at it's finest. Are all the commercial pintle rings mild steel?
