Default Blacksmith Diamond

Okay this is how you make a blacksmiths diamond..

I needed a new clinker breaker handle since the old one was used up at the clinker breaker..

The original was 1/2" the new one is 9/16 to help fill the worn holes in the firepot tuyere assembly..

All stock used was Wrought Iron.. The long 9/16 round stock came from an old Silo hoop and the rectangular stock came from an old 1" diameter Broken chain link..

What a pleasure to work with.. I forget just how wonderful good wrought iron is to work with.. It is like working with hot clay.. Each hammer blow the metal just molds.. Vs crappy steel..

Anyhow, First step is to upset the end of the rod for both extra material lost in welding and to help make the diamond as big as possible with less loss..

1, Upset end to nearly 3/4"

2, bend stock to form the extra mass for the head. (bolts and such are made the same way)..

3. Cut from both sides to center the burr..

4. Drift to make larger and to open the burr spacing.. Cut off the remainder of the burr.

5, Drift to create inner bevel and to finish smoothing the inside..

So the stock was really old and rusty. I had originally made it retangular nearly 15 years ago and not a very good job at that.. the end was not even..

So, Cut it off.. Remove burr..

Now drift to make the inside diameter round..

You can see the inside looks pretty good..

Before you can weld the ring onto the shaft there has to be a gap.. The gap is generally the width of the material or thickness from inside to out. So the gap should text book be about 5/8" as that is the thickness of the stock..

I only left about 1/2" gap.. A little tight but when I forge welded it I made sure to set the weld really well..

If the weld is not set well.. You will actually but weld the ring portion and then usually it will just fall off as a welded ring..

Here it is fitted to the rod in Pic 5.

So at first forge weld it all the way around by turning it.. Set the weld then just keep at it..

In the pictures it doesn't show how a bottom swage is used to keep the shaft in line and also how to forge in the end of the exposed center rod..

This is when having 2 extra arms would be really helpful..

Any, you put the rod in the swage and hit the end of the rod center to push it back into the center.. This happens with each welding heat..

Took 4 welding heats to complete the weld and get the diamond 90% finished.

The last picture is with the rod being bent and sitting in the bottom swage..

And finished.. I'll have to modify the pictures later.

I also have some video which I don't have time to modify and publish.. I'll do that tomorrow if I have time.

This swage in the anvil is one that I made.. If you guys notice it goes the full width.. This is the way I like them vs the traditional way.. I have full sets both top and bottoms..

Not a dumb question at all..

The handle didn't get installed.. I moved onto working the beehive oven door once I was done with the handle..

But the forge works amazingly well again even with the high carbon rod I just don't want to waste the tool steel..

I was having a problem of clinker, cinder and ash getting stuck on the outside edge inside the radius of the Tuyere. Now being all cleaned up inside and outside.. I don't know how to show the chefs approval with the fingers together and the kiss..

Now all the nasties just comes out like it's supposed to.. I also noticed an increase in air blast and the coked coal was no longer sticking to the sides of the firepot..

Today I'll pull the High carbon rod out and put the new one in..

Now that its all fancy and such..

I have not commented much on your threads this week because I have been slammed at work. So, I go into semi-brain dead reading room mode. This is one of those creations that just makes me go How do you make such a neat little diamond by wailing on wrought iron with a hammer. I continue to ponder building a forge on a skid-row budget. I think if I can find a big I-beam drop for cheap (as in scrap price) I could cut strips out of the web and flanges to build a firepot out of 3/4" to 1" material. The search for an anvil continues. I expanded my search area to include Nebraska and got a couple hits on Peter Wrights. One very small 80# the other decent size but, drastically FUBARED .http://grandisland.craigslist.org/tls/5580705056.html And it's damn near to Kearny Neb. 5+Hrs.
