Default My backhoe bucket cam repairs.

Saturday when I stopped digging the bucket on my hoe was swaying like a drunken sailor, so Sunday I decided to take the cam off the hoe and do the repair work on it. It rained almost all day here on Sunday so I could not get the tractor behind the shop and take it apart.
Monday it rained again but I started getting the tools gathered up to do the job while I waited for the rain to quit. While waiting for the rain to quit after finding all the tools and tooling I decided to straighten out some of the shop, that started out as the "Hunt for My Setscrew Assortment.". While looking for my setscrew assortment I found my two 100' pieces of 3/8" Poly rope that I will need to put in the 3" conduit, so the POCO can pull their own rope through the conduit to pull my new power cable to the house. Since I do not like knots in conduit I decided to splice the two pieces together. That began the "Hunt for my Rigging Manual", once the manual was found I spliced the two pieces together and found out I was short of the 200' length I needed for the job. I must have cut about 35' off the one rope for another job.
So the rain had quit by that time and I was back to the original job of taking the bucket and cams off the backhoe. It was a fight to get the bucket and cams off the hoe. I got the bucket off and the cams came off just before supper. After supper I went and bought another 50' of 3/8" poly rope, and started to finish taking the pins out of the last cam. I got the one pin off and the other one (main bucket pivot pin) needs the back of the nut ground before the I can remove it. That operation requires a bit of finesse, so I punted for the night as the light was not good outside the shop.
Today I am planning on welding the pin holes up in the cams and either building up the pins or make a temporary pin until I can get the right stock to make a new one.
While I am waiting for the parts to cool I am going to splice the last 50' section of rope to the one spliced yesterday.
Dan.

The cams were worse than I thought and the pins not worth rebuilding, I am off to my favorite scrap yard to see if I can locate enough RS to make new pins. All three pin bores need welded up and bored out to a press fit, lots of welding, drilling and boring out need to be done.

Doug, this old backhoe has two levers that mount to the bucket end of the dipper stick. These two levers connect the bucket cylinder to the bucket and the bucket to the dipper stick. When the cylinder is actuated these levers move the bucket. I will post some pictures later today as I got side tracked again on OPP after getting home from the scrapyard.
I will get some measurement today after I get the pin made.

I finished building up the worn out holes yesterday and have the one cam set up in Emma.
I took a lot of time and 7018 rod to build up the damaged areas. The first thing I need to do today is mill the outside surfaces of the cams flat. I built up the worn areas that the old castle nuts tightened against. Once the welds on that side are machined, then I can weld up the inside surface and machine it.
  1. The cams, the bottom one ready to weld up and the top one as it came off the hoe.
  2. Welded up.
  3. Surface built up also
  4. The bucket mounting hole.
  5. This is where the cylinder attaches.
When I bought my mills one of the cutters was a small 1"+ indexable carbide mill, I am going to try it and see how it works to machine the welds. If it does not work well I will have to build a fly cutter to do the machining with.

More photo's.
  1. Set up in Emma.
  2. Another view.
I am going to have to make a support for the end hang out of the vise and then turn the cam 180° to do the machining. The table of the mill does not have enough travel out to reach the bucket mounting hole.
Doug, I did not get a bushing out yesterday Will try to get that done today.

Your always welcome to stop by, by getting a bushing out, do you need
a press ? or do you mean to machine a new one ?

Either way, the shop (and materials) is at your disposal.

Doug, the bushings are still in the dipper. I ran out of daylight before I could get to them. I am going to try to drive them out today.

The base metal build up is done on both cams, one cam is milled back to the original thickness, all that is left to do on that one is spot and drill the holes.
The bushings are out of the bore and a friend thinks he might have a set of bushings that will work. I had to split one of the bushing to get it out of the bore. There was a spacer in between the bushings that I have to clean up and re-use.
Once the machine work is done on the cams I can start on the pin. I have a pretty good idea of how the pin should be made.

I did not get to the shop yesterday as I was coming down with a cold, I am going to try today but I am still feeling lousy.
