DoALL 36"

Okay, well if I wasn't crazy enough. I Went last week to look at a DoALL 36" bandsaw.

The price was right and well. DoALL is supposed to be the cadillac of saws. That is what I have been told.

The spec's are:

25-6000 sfpm. 3 speed gear box. coolant mister, weight feed system,

2hp 3phase.

And did I mention it's in really good shape. I got to see it run and tried all the gearing combinations.

But couldn't get it last week, because there was no way the trailer was going to handle it in the current state of affairs. 1500lbs (That was rectified this past week with a trailer rebuild this will be in another thread soon to follow).

The gentleman in the picture is who I bought it from. Nice guy. Is a fellow welder. Was a pleasure to deal with. Thanks

More pictures. This is a picture of me with my new saw. And then just some bling shots.

The unit is missing it's Machine tag. After some searching I think I'll be able to figure out year and model. As it stands now, I believe it's a 3612-3 or a 3613-2. Made around 1960. The date is from the band welder. Which from the manual will weld 2" carbon bands. This was actually the original reason for going down to see it. I'd like to be able to weld 1" bands and for the price of a bandsaw welder (4-6K) well this made sense.

For the age. There wasn't much crude inside. I did remove about 2 gallons worth of swarf and such. Not bad though. All the angle gears and shafts look clean.


The air pump belt is missing, but it does turn over and it did make a splurt sound when turned over. Also was full of oil. I'll see if I can find a belt. Made by Devilbliss company. I'll take it apart to clean out the poop.

The last couple are of the oil tank for the mister.

Funny thing is the pickup distance was 66.4 miles one way. Made great time getting back. 1.5 hrs.

Anyhow, When I was there. I checked everything twice to make sure I wouldn't loose anything on the way home.

I get home and go to check the oil container and it practically jumped of the 2 screws holding it and landed on the ground.

I was like wow. I'm so glad I didn't lose that in transit. So then I move along and realize the band tension handle is hanging a little low. Give it a grab and low and behold this comes off in my hand. This baby is held on with a ball detent like a 1/2" socket wrench. PHuffff. Good thing I didn't loose any of those things.

I'm sure now that you have it nestled into it's new digs, you'll have it fixed up and purring like new in short order. I give it about 2 weeks and you'll have it pristine.

That is one very nice saw. Once you have it set up you will wonder how you ever got along without it. Every shop needs a Cadillac

Cool saw, judging from the way it's constructed I don't think you could wear it out in a couple of lifetimes. It definitely ain't Harbor Freight. I looked at the trailer thread first and the picture of the saw on the trailer and I wondered right away if it got loaded on with a forklift. Cause I was eyeballing the height of that saw and the headroom it was going to take to use that chainfall in a straight lift. When there is a will there is a way. But, it would have taken some "Creative Rigging" All in all an excellent score.

Well, I'm still a little shell shocked. I can hardly believe I bought the thing.


Back when I started out to find a vertical bandsaw, (almost 1 year ago now) I was like well. Let's do some lookin. I had seen the nice little 16" Walker Turners variable speed wood /metal saws and actually had contacted a guy about one that he posted to CL but he refused to give a price nor measure the wheels Nor let me come out and see it.

After some looking at this and that. It turned out the Powermatic saws looked the most attractive for the features/options and for the most part were in a price structure I could live with (1000.00 was budget).And are made very nicely. Now mind you most were selling for 2000.00, and the ones I had seen go for less were in California. So the cost + shipping would have done that in.

Now all along I watched Grob's, and DoALL's go here and there and the Grobs were coming down in price. But the DoALL's really didn't budge.

The Pricing on these biggins seems to be more reasonable than the 20" models though still 2000.00+. Still out of budget.


Now I go and get this sweet 20" Powermatic model 87, install A SMVector VFD, and get it purring sweet blumming juniper in July. I say to myself, well lets search CL for a bandsaw.

I emailed the guy right away. No response.

I called the guy a few days later, no response

I emailed the guy a few more days after that. NO response.

So, at this point I had just about given up. I said to myself. Well, one more time. And the guy answers. Hello, yup still have the saw. It's buried up in back of the shop and is the reason I haven't back to you. I've been trying to get a job out before I pull it out. I'll give you a call back after the weekend. And yes you are the first person on the list to call or email so it's yours to come and look at before I pass it along to anybody else. This was Wednesday.

The following Tuesday I call the guy and no answer, just machine. Ah, bummer.

Few hours later he calls and says when you coming down. I said Thursday or Friday.

I walk in look it over and was like. Does it run. He said sure does.(push start and yeah, it runs) I said does the blade welder work. Sure does he cuts off a section of blade and in the welder it goes. After some direction reading the sparks fly. Yep, sure does.

There was sweet Betsy, Easy money just an hour and a half away.


Just the week before The 36" DoALL ad appeared, I went and looked at A Doall 20" and a Doall 26" and all of these were in the 1800-2500 range. The 26" had a nice bandsaw welder but was from 1947. Old as the hills. My powermatic needed a bandsaw shear, used were going for 100.00.

I hemmed and hauded over it and went to see if the guys who had the 26" would be willing to sell me the bandsaw welder. We struck a deal for 165.00 but just couldn't bring myself to part with the money.

At this point I had spoken with Mister Doall 36, And he said it had a blade welder on it. Hadn't see in at this point but figured the 26" welder more than likely would still be there if the 36" didn't work out. And besides that. 165.00 + 100.00 for blade shear+ 265.00.

Anyhow, to say the least it is one hell of a bandsaw. It is still sitting on the trailer and will be at least for another 3 or 4 days. I have 8" swivel casters coming to make a platform dolley out of. Then I will be taking the Powermatic out of the shop to sell. I was originally going to keep both and just have them setup for different tasks. But after some extra insight from a friend it really makes the best sense. Now with that being said. I do have a place to store it inside another friends place until I build my shop. So, then again maybe I'll just keep both.


So, next phase it to make dolly so I can get Big Betzy off the trailer, Then buy/ borrow or steal a 3 phase panel so I can hook up the 40HP Rotary phase converter.

Today I spent cleaning up in inside and it really is clean. This maybe one of the easiest restore projects I've come up against. Time will tell i guess.

There is a place on top for a 3/4" lifting lug. And yes the next project on the trailer is to lift the trolley up about 2 more ft to get extra clearance. Not sure how I'm going to do it yet. Maybe just some spacers.

I figure I'll make the dolly and see if I can get a few inches out of a lift at a time. Then slip it in. this really makes the best sense. We'll have to see. I'll take pictures no matter how it works out.
