Talking Hot dawg, HF comes through again

I bought this little number a while back after they first came out but have not been able to get it installed/used until the last few weeks. I bought one of their air/hydraulic bottle jacks for a small press project that I have had on the back burner for a while and finally got around to getting it made. Here is a link to the jack.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=95553

We make some bicycle pannier racks for a local company where the ends of the tubing need to be crimped/flattened where they mount on the dropouts of the bike. I recently fabbed up a new press to do the crimping and incorporated the new HF A/H jack to do the work.

The first two pics are of the press with the jack installed. Pic 3 is close-up shot of the crimping unit. Pic 4 is an open shot of the crimping unit off of the press. I welded some shim stock in place to get the right amount of space on order to properly crimp the tubing. Pic 5 is the air valve that is included with the jack.

More to follow.

The next pic is of the tubing in the press after it is crimped. It's pretty easy to tell when the jack hits it's max as there is a very audible slowing of the air motor. This makes it very easy to get just the right amount of pressure.

The next pic is of the tubing end after it has been crimped.

The next two pics show what the ends look like after the mounting holes have been drilled and the finish work has been done.

The last pic is what the rack looks like before powder coat. We also make the stays for the rack that make it attach to the seatstays but they are not shown.

This bottle jack is really sweet in this application. I do about 30 of these particular racks each week and this mod has shaved a bunch of time off of the way we were doing it before. So far, so good on the HF A/H jack. Long term remains to be seen but I like it so far

Nice work KB, nicely formed end on those tubes. How about some closer pics of the inside of the die?

Is it just less work then an arbor press? I've done a lot of EMT crimping in an arbor press, and didn't find it to be that big of a hassle.. Does the jack / press save much time and energy?

Looks like a nice finished product. Great job

No it is an air over hyd. set up....it uses the air to "pump" the hyd. vs you doing it.....it's much faster.
