Default Firewood Rack

I have been meaning to build a better firewood rack for my back porch for 5 years. Things keep happening, it never seemed to build itself.

1. I have two of these oak dollies that I had been using to stack wood on but without side rails it was a trick to keep it stacked because I buy random length shorts from my wood guy.

2. And of course, I had the year's accumulation of junk and other stuff to get off the porch before I could clean it up. I had to move this old Sears Roebuck incubator out of the way temporarily; I use it for charcoal storage, etc.

3. Set it on the shop drive. It will go back on the far side of the porch after housekeeping.

4. I used some more of those old porch roof supports that my neighbor lady tossed my way a couple of years ago when she did some yard cleaning. I had to cut both ends to get rid of rust so I got out the much-maligned Carolina bandsaw because the rails were about 9 inches wide. Sure enough, the motor crapped out; I had always been suspicious of it because it ran rough. Lost the pulley end bushing.

5. Best I could come up with was this little 1/2hp (gray) motor. I lost a couple of hours but finally got the old saw back to limping along and got through the job.

I actually spent twice as much time cleaning up the porch and rearranging junk as I did building the rack and I still have a yardfull of crap that needs to find a new home but that's how all my projects go. This is the first time I have seen most of the porch floor in a couple of years.

1. Once I got the porch straightened out, I moved the incubator back in to the other side. It was a squeeze.

2. For the past five years I have been stacking the wood on the west side of the porch & wheelbarrowing it across. I decided to flip that arrangement so I can drive the Whiteboy directly up to the new rack on the east side. So I had to set the charcoal box on the west side. More of a squeeze.

3. Finally got the stuff arranged so the dogs could relax. I will use the second dolly for kindling & such.

4. I know it's kinda silly but I like this old incubator; I found it at a yard sale a few years ago & gutted it for just this purpose.

5. I kept the name tag.

It was late afternoon before I got through the junk scattering and sweeping and bandsaw fixing so I knew it would be dark before I finished the rack.

1. I snatched a basket full of wood & parked it at the ready so I wouldn't have to do it after dark.

2. Finally got the sides welded up and sat in place. All I have to do after this picture is drill some holes.

3. I used self-tapping screws to hold the stretcher in place at the top, lag bolts into the oak dolly at the bottom.

4. And along about midnight I got the first little dab of firewood in place. I hope to have time to get more split in the next couple of days. The weather boys say winter is finally coming to the High Plains Wednesday - cold for Thanksgiving and ferdzzing dirrdzzle by Friday.
The little Whiteboy is safely back inside the shop after putting in a good day's work.

Do a lot of outdoor grilling Cutter? That seems to be quite a stash of charcoal you have in the incubator.

Not really & there's only a couple of bags.
There are other containers for other combustibles.
All kinds of random yard stuff winds up in there.

Oh sure - I'm out saving the world (and my friend's job) and miss the chance to be first.

That's ok. I don't mind.

It's a very fine wood storage structure, Cutter.
