Default Rotating trailer mounted hoist idea

This is an idea I`ve been kicking around for a while.
Loosely based on the tire carrier found in this thread

The rotating assembly will consist of parts from a 14bolt axle.The hoist frame may be a modified store bought,or a home fabbed set-up(undecided yet).It will be used in conjunction with a winch already mounted on the trailer.I`m hoping for a capacity of around 1,000lb

You are talking about a semi trailer hub ? If I am right it should take the torque . You are going to have to build an adapter to mount the post to the hub , you would not want to weaken the base of your post by cutting holes in it . Cable would be alright if you have a way to take up the slack before you start to lift whatever you are loading . Remember a cable running over the sheaves would only raise the object half as far as a chain and hook fixed to the front of the boom . And if your winch has enough pull you could overload the hydraulics of the boom if you tried to pick something that was too heavy . I will think about it some more . But your over all design has some merit . Dan

I believe he is talking about a GM 14 bolt (# of bolts on the cover) differential like is used on 1 ton trucks.

My Dad had one on his ¾ton Chevy service truck similar to that one, which was mounted on the right rear corner on a pedestal to clear the Koenigs, that leave spring set on that side had to be beefed up just to account for the crain and wt.distributing mt.plts.just to square up static ride. You might consider a drop down leg on the crain side as a stabilizer while loading large items.

Thank you all very much for the replies and ideas,I appreciate the input.
I still have to decide what I am going to do IE:buy or build.
Just throwing an idea out there since I already have most of the material on hand for the one that I posted.

Rob, just a friendly note for hauling heavy loads. Next time you have your John Deere ready to haul as pictured, you might want to utilize the trip'l axles to their best advantage and keep all that extra weight off the tounge.

Y`all really think thats overkill,naaaahhhh!
Actually when the trailer is empty,I dont even need the jack to hold it up.It only drops a couple of inches from ride height. :evil:
