Glad I wasn't him, but it was a quick death.

That was one of the most gruesome one I have seen. ( luckily only in videos, not firsthand). This should keep me on my toes for another six months or so at work.

I have seen that one, I have some pictures of another lathe accident, also fatal.
I showed them to my teens when they wanted to start learning on the machine tools. I also told them the mill with take your hand off, the lathe will kill you.

That video cost me about an hour of sleep last night. I woke up about 12:30 a.m. with that guy on my mind. I bet he'd sure like a "do over" with that machine.

I’ve witnessed two lathe incidents. One, a guy at high school back in the day, was filing right handed instead of left, and got caught by the lathe dog on the work piece. Fortunate for him, the clutch was in need of adjustment, so it slipped before it got to doing serious damage to him. Ripped sleeve on the shop coat, bruised arm and that was about it.
The other was a girl with a pony tail, dropped a chuck key, and when she went to pick it up, her pony tail caught in the leadscrew by the tailstock end. Again, someone was able to shut it off before it scalped her. It was close, she had bruising and greasy hair, nothing more. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I see loose long sleeved coveralls and reaching over a rotating work piece. Gloves are another bad thing.
This worries me as I have seen a similar video in the past and I always have my cuffs buttoned up or short sleeved shirt. I shut off to do anything on the machine. I don't wear gloves to operate and so I have to dig out metal slivers occasionally. I love having a lathe but I don't want to be found like that. My machine only has 2 hp but in low gears the torque is serious.

Tractor PTO's are a similar danger where you need to be careful being close to. I know (or knew) one local farmer who was killed by getting snagged in a PTO while baling.
Also know a farm wife who lost about half her scalp by getting her hair in a PTO. ![]()

Back in the 70's we had a girl at a portable tool maker who ran a commander head drill . One week she was wearing a old work shirt . Next thing we knew she was standing nude from the waist up with the shirt wrapped around a drill stem . The next week she had her long hair down and lost a chunk of hair ,scalp . She was discharged due to lack of safety awareness .
