Gms of that vintage have problems with the low side cycling switch, it can be bypassed to test its function. a tiny cotter pin works well, to do much diagnosis you need a set of guages, high side is good to know. the do it your self kits with the low side color indicator gages are not a reliable way to check.
a good guage hooked to the low side will tell you if you have a workable base charge. you should have 70 psi on a 70 degree day with a system that has sat for a few hours. but that is not a guarantee.
If the system did slow leak repeatedly it needs to be vacuumed for a while to pull the moisture and the heavy ends out,
