For installation I'd use a wrench, I doubt fingers would get it tight enough.
 I don't think this helps much though.

With that type of lock nut you tighten to required torque spec and then use a punch to fold over the part where the notch is. Makes a very positive locking mechanism. You can, in some cases, use a screwdriver to "spread" the notched section instead...

Slit locknut. Looks like some have the thinner part somewhat pinched. See pic for the way they grip opposite sides of the bolt thread.

Back in the bad old days, before locktite, if we wanted a threaded fastener to stay fastened, we added a drop of tincture methylate or iodine to the threads before assembly.
If disassembly became necessary, a blue point wrench was required. Occasionally, an impact wrench to break it, and then a drill out and re tap. Never had one come loose or back off. RED the ancient
