For installation I'd use a wrench, I doubt fingers would get it tight enough.

With that type of lock nut you tighten to required torque spec and then use a punch to fold over the part where the notch is. Makes a very positive locking mechanism. You can, in some cases, use a screwdriver to "spread" the notched section instead...

I have seen those with spring clips before, is there a machined spot on the stud?

Slit locknut. Looks like some have the thinner part somewhat pinched. See pic for the way they grip opposite sides of the bolt thread.

When I was in 5th grade at a "progressive" school, I'd ask the teacher how a word was spelled. She'd tell me to look it up in the dictionary. How in the hell can I look it up if I don't know how to spell it? Well, I learned how to do it and learned a whole lot of off-color stuff as well. ![]() But, hey, slit nuts is an interesting concept. Of course the best way to lock nuts and bolts together is rust. It will outlast most anything it holds together (these days). Look up a formula for "rust cement". Better than Loctite red.

Back in the bad old days, before locktite, if we wanted a threaded fastener to stay fastened, we added a drop of tincture methylate or iodine to the threads before assembly.
If disassembly became necessary, a blue point wrench was required. Occasionally, an impact wrench to break it, and then a drill out and re tap. Never had one come loose or back off. RED the ancient
