I am with digr, but I still am fascinated by the objective.

I believe this has to do with ice fishing. You out on the frozen ice, drill a hole in the ice and put in a fishing pole. This is hooked up to a tip up, which tips up a flag when you have a fish on the line. This way, you can have several poles going at once, and you can sit inside a heated fish shanty, and look out occasionally to see if you need to reel in a fish. Sounds like the guy wants one that will let him know he has a fish on when he is in the house a half mile away. Sent from my iPod touch using SFT

How about a series of short range radios as relays?

Hmmm. Not all jurisdictions allow unattended fishing. At some point, the distance will pass the limit. Might pay to check with a Wildlife officer before the event.

Personally I find this rather disgusting--if you can't be there........don't fish...

Fishing by drone?

I'm not and ice fisherman myself. To me fishing is a way to enjoy warm sunshine and cool blue water. Catching a fish is just an interruption of the process.

I once made a game call using a pair of FRS radios and an old MP3 player.
Crude, but it worked, a LONG way.

You could wire the tip up trip into the "call" button on an FRS radio, put it in a watertight container and have the range you need.

Prepaid phone that dials his phone when it goes up. All the design for weather and battery life is already there.

This is legal in Wisconsin where he is , here in Michigan you would be cited for unattended lines .
