Default What is everyone else paying for steel?

I'm asking out curiosity more than anything. I just ordered 80' of 3/8"x2" flat at a price of a $1.69/ft., 60' of 1/4"x2" flat at $1.13/ft., and 10' of 3"x 5lb./ft. at a price of $3.55/ft. Same supplier sold me 40' of 3"x3/16" angle 9 months ago for $75. It's been awhile since I've had to order new steel, ok more like 3 years, so I'm a little out of touch.

Steel price is really more of a local issue. I notice you had a 10" pc. You probably paid for 5" of the left over pc. I try to buy full joints. I try to buy "shorts" and cut-offs. I buy some things I don't need if the price is right so I will have it when I need it.

My Uncle has a factory and buys steel in 40,000# loads. I try to piggyback my needs on top of his. Sometimes the steel folks call him with a deal if they are overstocked. If he gets a good deal and they back it up with shipping help he buys.

Based on just the flat bar, that's about 66 cents/pound. Seems to me that's what I paid a few years back before prices jumped up.

I don't know about steel, but I bought some aluminum the other day and prices were about 70% to 80% what they were in September...

I usually forget after too long, but I just paid $52 for a 20' stick of 2 x 3 x 3/16" angle.

Last week I paid $232 for 10 stick of 24 foot 14 guage welded 1X2 rect. tubing, cut in half. This comes out less than a buck a foot. A year plus ago it was $ 1.70 at the same supplier. It could be a supply demand thing as there were not many pickups at the yard when I was there, unlike a year ago. Also this place delivers and I saw a lot of their trucks sitting in the lot empty.
