Does anyone know what happens inside SS when it's being molested in the forge-brought up to critical,and higher,several times over?Also,if it was ground down past the decarburised layer afterwards,would some non-corrosive qualities remain?I can't specify the alloy,talking about the outboard motor output shafts.Presume them to be some medium carbon deal,toughness being their main point.They rarely snap off,and are soft enough to be damaged by the vice-grip jaws in dissassembly,also the key-way likes to wobble out with time,so fairly soft.

no clue. Is the SS magnetic?

as long as you bring it up over the critical it will anneal....if not not it will work harden....it will still keep it's non-corrosive qualities because that is do to the chemistry of the metal
