Please re-read and comprehend from the begining. 1. OP is cheap, and want's to spend zero money 2. OP believes some simple 8 hp engine can do the job. 3. Myself and others, whom have put real money & time into such devices advised against it, and brought real numbers into the debate. You have done nothing, and when asked to provide some evidence to back up your "scale it down" idea, you punt to "I was just throwing it out there" Well throw it back. It's hard to say with out seeing.
Maybe an electric chainsaw mounted with a pivot, and a dual action air cylinder to feed and retract.

All the negatives aside, I think the only real issue to making your own thrashomatic is the safety of the operator. You have to be able to push a tree as it is beat to pieces so it falls away from you. A quad won't do it.
And you have to have overhead protection in case a dead limb or top want to come straight down as the tree falls over. I have witnessed a faller getting his back broken by a snowball, that was about 16" diameter that fell from the top of a tree as he tipped it over.

some good input here guys, thanks.all these trees are red and white pine with some jackpine mixed in.none are over 7ft tall and are bushy, having one fall on me would not hurt.i like the chainsaw idea with the pivot, that would be ok.just have to read into how a 2 way pneumatic cylinder works.can easily throw my generator in the trailer to power an electric chainsaw and a small air compressor . having some kind of a minature thrashamatic would be interesting.how would a guy build one?
thanks again. ![]() |

That may be but a railroad coupler will knock a couple of teeth off the drum and it will start vibrating like a banshee. I had a Rayco C100 sitting at my place for a month or so while Rayco was rebalancing the drum.
