Morse tapers are made to be removed and inserted on a regular basis. Many tools have them--drill chucks, live centres, tapping heads, boring heads and morse taper drills themselves. A Jacobs taper, on the other hand, is usually meant to be a permanent installation.

You have a tapping head with the proper taper; just buy a drill chuck and the appropriate arbour to go with it. No need to be swapping the Jacobs tapers.

And just a note about tangs. If you happen to acquire a tool with a threaded morse taper shank (without a tang) you can usually thread a bolt in to get the length you need for the drift key to work...

Thanks, that's good info. Can anyone recommend a decent 1/2" keyed chuck? My other drill presses have genuine Jacobs chucks on them and they've been great, although pricey. Are the other ones mostly junk? It's for home use only.

Figure out what morse taper you have and start searching eBay for a decent Jacobs Superchuck that fits your drill. Some say that the new ones aren't as good as the old ones so a decent looking old one is probably your best bet. You can switch out the JT to MT adapter if you find a nice looking chuck with the wrong MT. That's what I ended up doing.

That's a great idea and exactly what I am going to do, thanks
