Default Leaves and Leather

We showed horses hard all year and it went pretty well. I was trying to come up with something to make Allison for Christmas and decided she needed a regular sign to put up at the bigger shows.

So I picked out a double shoulder of some fairly nice leather and dedicated it to making a banner. It took a couple days just to do the tooling and I'd hate to say how many taps of the mallet are in there. Honestly I spent most of December swinging a hammer of one kind or another.

Once the leather was done I had to come up with a way to hang it that would make it stay straight and flat.

I settled on making a steel bar to hang it from. The body of it is half inch round bar lightly textured with a hammer. The leaves are also forged from half inch round bar.

I finished it off with a coat of rust converter, which gives it a nice flat black finish. I have to dig around and find a final pic of it put together, but here it is laying on my leatherwork bench.

Are you going add a backing to the leather to help hold it flatter??

So far it hangs pretty well when its against a wall. Its 6 oz leather. If it doesn't lay flat I will either make another bar for the bottom or I will come up with a backer. I'm hoping I can roll it up and store it in the horse trailer between shows so I don't want it on board or anything.

That is cool.. Are you going to put metal strips on the leather to keep it from curling or double it up?
