It was a rod connection at a square tube detail that was changed. And failed when a bunch of old geezers were two stepping on (I believe) New Years Eve.

I am not sure how to calculate that but with common floor joists its still substancial overkill. Its not going to really want to twist it, it will still be basically pushing straight down. As light as this load is it wont be a factor and as buck said,, 18T in the center. I remember reading about the KC deal, they missed a critical brace, didnt install it,, a column to girder type brace of some kind, I think it was to triangulate the connection somehow,,then I think they went back somewhere along the line and found someone was paying an inspector off on that job to boot. Its been a long time so my recall might not be accurate but having some interest in structural failures it caught my attn.

Franz, don't worry about the mop, my floor is sloped so when I pee it goes right to the floor drain. that way I didn't need to put in a yurinal.

I am thinking along your lines (but still want to be safe) but most farm shops around here have wood beem lofts. and you know how much crap farmers drag home from auctions. and that's where most of it goes, till they retire and have an auction of thier own. I mainly am going steel to eliminate the 8 ft post spacing I'd have with a wood beemed structure.

lot's of good input here though.

I'll take more pics tommorrow. we welded all the joist hangars on today.

You know, has much as I hate wood. One can’t sell it short! My engineering buddies tell me wood is so forgiving. And another thing about wood it talks to you, it lets you know it’s in trouble, long before it fails. Another good think about wood (I can’t believe I said that) in a fire, a wood structure will keep it structural value longer than steel. Little weight on a steel beam, and some heat, now you got problems!

Dirt, ive read your question 4 times and I dont understand what your worried about,,I have a 3 car over sized garage,,its 40 ft wd,,and a full loft,,A engineer buddy figured out the beam size ,,because I wanted to be able to hold a slate pool table, and a dozen guys,Furniture, etc,,,and the beam is WF 12x8x50# per ft,,i now have a 1 ton electric crane on a trolly ,,and Ive picked up 2250 # machine dead center of garage,,,no deflection, never moved,,Im home for a little bit at 860-663-4244,,if you have any questions please call,Thanks,Jack
