Default belt grinder options

Thanks again for the further input. Man, the Jet grinder combo looks nice. I am not a machinist and have never built anything with an electric motor/belts/pulleys but the multiple "projects" on the diy site certainly look interesting. I'm not sure where I get motors/pulleys/belts here in New Hampshire but I'm sure they are available...
This forum continues to impress me with your willingness to help and not ridicule. As a "newbie" and a hobbyist I am very grateful to all of you for responding.

Bruce -- just start building one!

Parts...
https://www.beaumontmetalworks.com/shop/
In addition to complete works of art, they also sell wheels. In many cases just explain what you need, and a member can help you out.

A fellow airplane builder put together a 2" x 74" belt grinder from a decent
scrap pile. Good inspiration:

We all started someplace, just dive in. Safety first, then go for it.

Tom

PS -- this is what I'm thinking for my next grinder.
Tool Steel. Heat Treat Oven. Personal Grinder 6" x 12" (I keep finding junk at auctions).

One other tip... everything warps. The minute you heat steel, and it cools... it is pulled out of alignment. Just part of life, like taxes and death.

If you add a "bolt up plates" (4" x 4" plates) to a 2" x 4" steel tubing arm. You have a method of moving end end of a 2' long arm. Just a simple 0.010" shim on one side works.

There is something called flame straightening (heat a spot, let if cool and it will pull metal in). Pretty cool to play with, but if I need everything in perfect alignment a shim is quick.

Default DIY belt grinder

Tom,
I am cautiously encouraged to try. How do I measure feet per minute speed of my grinding belt? I assume a 1hp motor single speed 115 v would be sufficient.

Bruce
(D x 3.14)
------------ x rpm = surface feet per minute
......12

D = diameter of the driven pulley
rpm = the rpm of the motor.

Hi Guys,
In this thread there has been mention of both the Jancy belt grinder and the Multi tool belt grinder .Both originally are Australian designed and made products from the same inventor.

I have owned the Multi tool for some 20 years and swear by it. I use it far more than any other electrical tool in my workshop. I switch it on at least once a day.

The unit can grind, sand, polish, sharpen and shape metals until the cows come home.Flap discs on an angle grinder lasts minutes but belts last weeks.

A disc is fitted to the major wheel plus it takes attachment table to bevel materials and a hollow grind fixture for chisels and screw drivers.

Recently there had been a manufacturing (some components were China made- see what happens ? ) problem with some of the disc wheel concentricities, but I understand that has now been fixed. I would love to buy a Radius Master but they are over $2000 Au and I will have wait for a lottery win.

A mobile stand and a wire buff on the other end on the grinder body is about all the improvement one can do to this marvelous tool.

Yes, I own the fore mentioned Jancy RadiusMaster, at this point I wouldn't be without a belt grinder. I use it constantly, everything from light touch work, to honest metal removal (at a scary rate). Mine is rated at 3600 fpm, some units available can go as high as 8000 fpm.

Between the Jancy and flap wheels on Metabo grinders, I haven't used a bench grinder is about 5-6 years, no need to. As most stuff the shop is cut out with a plasma cutter, there is very little clean up.

Default I finished my belt grinder!!

I finished my belt grinder today but I need a 2 inch by 36 inch Zirc belt to try and use the machine. My wife took a video with her iphone but I don't know if I can post a video (nor do I have any idea how to). This is my first ever project in my newly inherited newbie metal shop and I am very proud. I hope the damn thing will work but I would like to show it to the forum for some constructive criticism...

We want to see it, too and we'll get that video up one way or the other in due course.
