I thought about a paint job for the old gal but she just works so good the way she is.Besides that it would probaly just bring out the pits where you could realy see'em.I think it had a swivel base before it was lost off of a Pipeline rig. That is how we guesstimated the amount of time it was in the ground. Hope you have the same end results with the Wilton.
Good Luck

I can think of no good reason to paint a vise.
Or to chrome an anvil. Or to shave a horse.

Hey Cutter,
Has the possibility been discussed that it's stuck due to someone welding something clamped in the vise? If it was clamped in the vise, and the ground was on the table, that vise might have been part of the circuit and if so it might have seen some internal arcing. It might be welded up inside. But even if it were, that press should be able to hopefully break it free. Good luck! --Bob |

"Can This Vise Be Saved" the beginning..
I have a heads up to post here. Madam and I have been working on the exhumed remains of "Can This Vise Be Saved?" Actually for sake of full disclosure, she has done nearly all the work. I have generally just murmured encouragement and made grateful noises. We have been discussing what to do with it and when to do it. I want it posted here for a couple of reasons, mainly just so the complete story can be available to new members/readers in one place. However, there is no mechanism in the v-Bulletin software that allows her to paste it into the front of this thread. If she entered it here, there would be 19 pages between right here and the next post anyone else entered. Soooo, we are going to be forced to post it as a new thread. It will be titled "Cutter's Vise - In the Beginning."
I feel somewhat immodest about doing this, however this thread has shown in excess of 1000 hits just since I pulled the Wilton out of the Zep bucket last Thursday. The original thread had over 15,000 hits over on the other site in 2004. All this leads me to believe that there is still considerable interest in the ongoing story of this stubborn old S.O.B. of a vise. And I have to believe that many of you that have registered here in recent months have never seen the beginning of the story or even photos of the old rustbucket when I first posted it. So, you Garbage Gangers & anyone else that is bored with the saga can be forewarned to skip "In the Beginning" if you like. It will be a closed thread, meaning that you can't post to it; you will have to post to this thread instead. It should make its appearance sometime tomorrow. The whole idea is just get it into our archives. I gotta say though, that it is still a pretty funny read.

Great idea Rod, for full enjoyment of the saga folks need to understand the history here and it is a great read! Kudos to Madam X for her doing the "legwork" albeit with short legs

Some people follow sports players to see if they can conquer a challenge, I follow Cutter to see if he can conquer a vice.
Been following since the beginning at the other forum. |

And today’s question Will Madam X censor this beautiful thread ?
Cutter this is such a humerous saga that it deserves to be available to new members. It is the only thread that I am aware of that has migrated congratulations Terry |

It is done!
Now the entire story of Cutter's Vise is available for enthusiasts and insomniacs alike. Terry, I wouldn't dream of altering a single syllable or spelling error (as you'll see).
Don't we know by now that I'm not the censor? The thread is in the Equipment, Suppliers and OEM's Forum. Here's a link: Cutter's Vise ~ In the Beginning
