Shade you are absolutely correct that its overkill but it's what I have so what I will probably use, although things are staying tight so far.
BTW I've realized the actual milling machine is the way to go but I only have one problem, no money! JBFab yes it is cool. This lathe has been in the family for about 40 years, before that it belonged to a neighbor that lived about 2 miles away from us. I'm told that the neighbor hand built a diesel engine from scratch with it. The milling attachment is nice but it is limited and not very rigid. I have to take light cuts and make sure my cutter is sharp. If I have the need for something bigger I can go to my brothers shop. He has a Bridgeport, a CNC mill, a bigger lathe and all kinds of other cool equipment.
