I was the same way. A good friend and former co-worker of mine is also a knife maker. He makes some downright beautiful knives. Many blades he crafted from discarded bandsaw blades we used at that employer (about 2" wide and almost 1/8" thick). Some he made in damascus - those were my favorite. The handles were made from any manner of material, some purchased most made by hand. He was into wood burls for a while, just gorgeous.

The darker colored one at the top used to be the same color as the yellow one at the bottom, you can see a line on the handle where the sun has darkened it if you look close. I don't go anywhere without it. I'll use it for everything until I get bored and then I'll make something different
