Here I am about to cut the tailgate pillar supports. I want to make one diagonal cut through the tube and end up with two supports of equal size and shape. Because the inner surface of tubing like this is usually not flat simply laying the tube on the saw table is not a reliable way to achieve this.

To help ensure both pieces will be the same I have tack welded small pieces of 1/4" rod to the area near the bend. This area next to the bend of tubing is usually much more consistent, it is there that the tubing will now contact the saw table and my cut should be even on both sides. The rods will be cut off and filed smooth after I make the cut.

I covered the bearing race with tape to protect it from spatter while I plug welded the four holes that were used to attach the plate to the rotary table. The pressing in of the 2" diameter pin will follow.

Each bearing tier has 87 1/2" ball for a total of 174. Notice the groove cut in the pin, this will be filled with weld.

The setup for pressing the bottom race plate. It was put together using two pieces of channel a few blocks and 1/2" threaded rod screwed into my fabricating table. The channels were C-clamped together so no welds to remove when I'm done.

I tack welded two pieces of scrap steel to the plates. These are to attach the grounding clamp for welding. I don't want potentially damaging electrical current passing through the bearing balls. I have also stuffed twine in the gaps between the plates to protect the bearings from weld spatter.

Here I am to bend .08" thick sheet steel over a 1" radius. The form was made from one piece of 2" round bar and one piece of 1"x2" bar. The two bars were tack welded together on the end.

A 2x4 soft wood block as a corking tool and a 3 pound hammer was used to move it. The bent steel will become a shield/fender to help protect the bearings from foreign material..
