That's why it would make sense to make the top bar so it swivels. You could have a lower height for working in tight spots but also have the ability to raise the outer end to gain some extra height...

Can't you run a beam or build a jib in your shop for lifting and rolling?

Yes, but I was trying to do the whole "kill two birds with one stone" kind of a thing.

My first option was to build a gantry with large off road tires that could be used inside and out. I don't like that option because I'm limited to that 7'9" height and if I were to do a trolley and winch, it's starting to get pretty low. I could ditch the trolley but if I was going to use an I-Beam, I might as well.

How about a three wheeled cherry picker using the same wheels you used on your smoker build. Build to fit your needs and should be easy to move.

I forgot I built this thing and thought I'd post an update to this thread. I used two 10' long, 3" square tubes that I already had, then used a 5/8" bolt at the end with a snatch block between them. They hook into the front tow points on my bumper, I torch cut out the ends of the tubing to fit on them.
I used a 30' tow strap around the roll cage, and a 2 ton come-a-long for adjustment. My bumper has a 2" receiver hitch on it so my plan is to get a trailer jack attachment for it to adjust for ground level. In the mean time, I use a Hi-Lift jack and it works great.

The Warn 8274 winch has an 8000 pound capacity and the logs I've been lifting are no problem for it. I used it to lift about big 20 logs during one session with the engine off, and I had no problem starting it afterwards (which was one of my concerns)

I bent up a quick hook bracket from some 1/4" steel and use a lag bolt and my cordless impact to screw it into the log. Works pretty quick.

Right now, I feel that my weak link is the come-a-long since they seem so jankety I really don't trust them, so I stay out from underneath the thing at all times, but it seems to work very well for what I need it for right now. I still have a lot of big logs to split but my woodshed is full now so they get to wait until next year. That'll give me time to think about how I can make it better.

Thanks for the input all.

By the way, I'm in the process of building tube fenders for my Jeep so that's why the fenders look goofy.

Looks good. It reminds me of this setup that can be used on the vehicle or with the legs on the ground for a stronger pull.

Nice.

You might need a counterweight in the back.
