Default sebastian lathe in a box

First post here, I just purchased an old sebastian lathe that has been completely disassembled. I want to get it back together and am looking for a user manual of assembly manual or just allot of pictures show how this was originally put together. I believe its a 1915 13". It has the name SEBASTIAN on a brass plate, it was originally blue and it weighs 1500 + lbs.

Try looking on Vintage Machinery.org website. They have a lot of manuals and info on older machines, especially if it was made in USA.

Thankyou, the pictures help. I have most of it assembled but i believe this was someone's frankenstien's lathe. There is a gear on a shaft with a smaller gear on the other end. I can see where it use to go but I can not see its function? I will post a picture if I can.

I might be wrong, but that looks like a backgear assembly. On Southbend lathes, you can disengage the chuck from the driven spindle, and engage the shaft , usually buy rotating it into mesh with gears on the spindle, with 2 gears on a shaft like yours, to slow the spindle speed down by half. This allows you to have more low speed torque for certain operations.

Not sure if this is applicable to your lathe. I have not looked at any pictures yet.

+1. See attached photo.

There should be a pin that drops into a hole on the large gear on the headshaft that will engage/disengage the back gear function. If the back gear shaft is engaged AND the pin is left engaged, it will lock up the headshaft. Great for tightening something clamped in the chuck as long as too much force is not applied.

Default sebastian help

I need help. I believe I have a 1915 Sebastian lathe. It has been worked on and changed over the years. What I need is knowledge. I will post pictures if this site will let me.
1#. I have the back gears and the mount they go in, I do not have the shaft that goes through it all or the off set bearings. Can I mix southbend parts with sebastian?
2#. I have the banjo but no gears or (spindels?) that would attach the gears to the banjo. Again; can I mix other makes to get that working?
3# The motor I have for it is very old but works, it rotates at 1450 rpm which seems really high for a lathe?
4# Is the pictured knob fixable (replaceable with a different maker?)

I have to fix this lathe and get it workng or my wife will not let me buy other projects

As to US gears in general, you have to match the
Diametral Pitch
And
make sure the Pressure Angle are the same.

In general, Induction motors are one of two rpms 1750 or 3400
some older and fan motors in the 900, 1500 rpm but low power.

The use of back gear is what cuts your Rpm down and increases torque for lower speed.

notice that pin in the large spindle gear it has to do with disengaging the cone pulley for back Gear. ( I don't remember if you push it in, or pull it out for back gear).
