Bill, I have to say over my lifetime that working with Babbit material for bearings and then finish fitting/filing/scraping the material to tolerance needed is probably the most enjoyable of any of what I've done or needed to do over the years.
I've done several lathe machines, mostly for wood, a dozen Hudson engines from the 20's and more items than one would generally run across in 40 years and still not be considered a full blown machine shop machinist. ![]() It's amazing just how far 'word of mouth' will travel when you can do something so obscure by today's standards. lol Great pics and I do thank you for the updates and pictures added.

Interesting. Thanks for posting up.
I remember back in the '60s and '70s, my Dad, who was a mechanical engineer, had a whole slew of ingots of babbit in the garage...I guess he swiped them from the plants where he worked. Never poured any bearings that I recall, though. |
