Got this together today.
Only fired it for about ten minutes as I'm a bit paranoid about the bricks. There's definitely still a share of moisture in them as I left some steel lying inside the forge for a week and it came out rusty. I splashed out on a premade pipe burner from ebay and had some vermiculite board which I cut up as a lining. Its probably not designed for these temperatures but we'll see how long it lasts. I only ran for a short while and never got the gas up to full but it made a bit of flat go orange so that'll do for now. I have a lump of rail track on the farm an no shortage of heavy timber to make a stand from so must sort that next. |

Good going, John.
In your climate, the brick will always have some moisture absorbed from the air. I would say after the firing you just did I would just give it a half throttle fire and then full blast.

fired it a few more times until it stopped steaming and then had an actual need to make something, by which stage I had used most of the propane in the end of a bottle I'd found!
Still I did something I'd never have been able to do before, so that's a result to me. an increase in capability is always to be welcomed. I'm refurbishing an old tipper trailer at the moment and need a ring to secure the tailboard locking bar but couldnt find one locally and the one I found online was about 1.5 times the price for shipping. So....... Some resource pile steel and a bit of rebar, plus a lot of photos from my beautiful assistant and I have ended up with this creation. The flame was barely blue so I never really got the steel above orange but it was still hot enough for this work. a bit of welding and grinding and it's done. |

So I got an anvil. Or at least part of an anvil!!!!
Its missing the heel, a corner of one foot and the face is obviously beat all to hell. But its semi heirloom and the price was the best one. I'd been doing a bit of reading over the last while about anvil shaped objects and forklift tines come reccomend as a good source of steel for diy anvils. I'm thinking about doing some grinding to get it flat and welding on a piece of forklift tine, with a hardie hole in it |
