Believe it or not I have seen one of those--guy down the road has one. It is a bit of a space saver for sure. I saved one pic so that when the ad dies people will know what we're talking about...

I’m fairly sure I have one too although i haven’t seen it in years and don’t recall where it is. I do remember it was not in good condition and seized.

I have one! The bottom of the main body is hollow so you definitely do not want to do a lot of hammering on it.

Hmm....drawing from another thread....someone could make one, using 2" thick
steel for the "anvil" back instead of 1/2" plate normally there. |

A person sure could make one that is more durable..
Very light duty only. if one wants them to last. There is a combo tool much like this but has a forge, blower, grinder and vise built in.. I don't own one nor have a photo but they are kinda neat to look at.

Start with 3" thick oxy cut plate for the top surface, weld at least 1" thick side plates (to form the tunnel). Use very heavy acme thread rod (maybe 1 1/4") and make it run in 4" x 6" box tube (IIRC you can get that in 1/2" thick wall). OR ! use a 10 ton enerpac style cylinder inside the box tube (HF sells these) Make jaws milled into end of the 3" plate, so jaws are flush with anvil surface (unlike the normal vices) Like the one Keith pictured. Would you use a hardfacing rod on the anvil area ? |
