My buddy's dad passed a little over a year ago. A farmer, and a penny pincher with a sense of humor. Anyway, he was cremated and the cheapest container the funeral home offered to hold the remains was in the $200 range. That did not sit well so one of the three boys mentioned how well their dad liked Schwann's ice cream so they went to the Schwann's place and told the story and they were given an empty pail. The ice cream pail was on the table in front of the church for the service. That may not be legal everywhere but we are in podunk part of Michigan and apparently you can get away with it.

I always thought they could put my ashes in a Black Label Crown Royal bag and throw me in the hole.

When my Dad passed away, he had left instructions that he was to be cremated and his ashes spread on the farm he worked near his favourite spot.

I went to a upscale wood place and bought an ash board and a walnut board. Made a box with a hinged lid to hold his cremains between the time we picked them up from the crematorium till we gathered to spread his ashes after his memorial service. After making it, putting his ashes in it at the crematorium, and having it sit on a shelf in the house a few days, I let the rest of the family know I was done with it. One of my siblings took it home and produced it for my Mom's ashes. The box held her cremains until they were spread with Dad's on the farm they worked and lived on for 50 years.

The box disappeared again after her ashes were spread. I have no idea where it is....

Got a call from my wife's nephew today. The requester for the first pine box has passed on and he would like me to do the same for his Dad. Tomorrow I go shopping for lumber and other materials.

I'll take more photos if I have the time.

Of my wife's family of five, there are three remaining, and one aunt that is 94.

Very well done. Owner of a casket factory nearby, gave me a tour once. The caskets were so poorly made, I don't know how they stayed together.

Technically, they are one-time use... No one will be complaining the worms got in too quickly.

Bodies to be cremated go into a wax/cardboard type affair.
