I graduated HS in 1979 so was a long time ago, when was in 11th grade there was someone with a lightening bolt ear ring in his nose, but also never saw him in any shop classes.

Leaving High School one day my car would not start. After removing the starter I went into the auto shop to test it with the battery charger. The charger was being used at the time so I placed the starter on the ground next to the car being charged. If I had not been kneeling down at the time I disconnected the battery clamp I probably would not be typing this now.

The battery exploded with enough force to blow the top off. Plastic and acid few everywhere. I escaped without injury but the principal of the high school had to get a new battery.

Since then I developed a protocol for disconnecting charging auto batteries.

1: unplug charger
2: blow top of battery with a few breaths
3: turn face away from battery and disconnect clamp

I understand the connection should be made to ground away from the battery but this is not always easy to do. For the last forty years my diligence at maintaining protocol has successfully offset my laziness.
