Default LVL Lumber Size?

Since the information gained here will support the new shop I qualify this wood related thread as legitimate.

As I am doing design work I realized the possibility that the specified dimensions of LVL lumber may be nominal as opposed to actual. I assume that since it is an engineered product it should be indicated as actual but I could not find any data to support this on the internet. Can anyone confirm my belief?

I have always believed it to be nominal since the manufacturer supplier of the components is nominal. Just my beliefs, with no references to support it.

Yes, I have looked at both of those sights already. I did not see mention of nominal or actual. I'm surprised the manufacturers aren't indicating this on their sights, it has me wondering if I have overlooked this.

I could call a supplier but I know from past experience one can't always rely on getting accurate information, even when it involves something as simple as reading a tape scale.

Just curious, would it be critical if the dimensions were off a 32nd or so?

Page 3 of the Western BCI and VersaLam Specifier download shows actual dimensions. That's where I would start. I look at it as the same as going to a Ryerson steel catalog and finding out a W14x283 has a height of 16.74" and a width of 16.11", not the nominal 14" used in the description.

And it might be a good idea to actually call the place you are going to get your lumber from, to see what brand they carry. And then go to their website to get specifics.

It might vary from manufacturing company to different suppliers. And from region to region.

Everything from everyone varies, in my experience.

In this area if you have that type of floor joist, you must notify the fire dept. It seem that the fire rating is different and some floors have collapsed very quickly.
