Default Emission Diesels

I've been watching all the various threads about dealing with the crap new tech engines. My personal observation is by and large they are flaming POS. We have right now in our shop at work a Damn good Tech. We were blessed with "Hand Me Down" Navistar trucks from the buyout of a local entity Northern Colorado Disposal. Heath our tech is way more mellow than me dealing with just trying to keep them on the road. He does not skimp on fixes. He errs to the conservative side. As in DPF filters and whatever the fuck he thinks they need. Plus he is doing cleanup on trucks that were never really inspected before they were repainted and plastered with the new company LOGO. I guarantee if I was still in the shop. I would probably bring a lawn chair, a beer and a Railroad Flare. So, I could sit and watch one of the Motherfuckers burn. I haven't heard a good thing yet about a Maxstar engine, other than when a guy I know sent his last one to auction.

Which engines are in these?

Most the arctic ice road trucks are 20-30 years old. Some are dedicated to pulling these trucks with frozen up DEF engines and the ones with plugged soot filters. They cannot reach regen temps when it is -50. Somebody is going to die in the cold with these crappy trucks.
That's why I decided to keep my 06 truck.

I've noticed both UPS and the Brown Rugby Team driving gas powered step vans.

I'm hearing the dodge 6.4l hemi GAS in the 3500 trucks is making good mileage.
I saw a hotshot truck with one, pulling a 30' gooseneck.

Went to an auction today 70 miles one way and got 22mpg pulling a empty 16' flatbed trailer on the way there and 20mpg on the way back with my 2004 dodge 5.9. The way back was a real slight uphill grade.

Definitely not DEF dependant. I don't want one and will go backwards if the time ever comes to replace my '03 Six.Slo.

How many people who have a diesel requiring DEF, do a delete? Big problem if living in a area that requires smog inspections like California, & having to reinstall it every 2 years to pass smog. Thankfully my 1995 Dodge does not require smog as diesels older then 1998, do not require it, because my 1999 F250 7.3 is a PITA to smog. Long past time to get out of California, but that is subject for another time.

Alberta where I am now, lots of them get deleted. Ontario where I will travel too, they have roadside inspections, big fines and also sometimes will pull plates and tow.

The insurance companies aren’t helping, as they now are jacking rates on older vehicles, stating parts are too hard/expensive to get. I’m also guessing they would rather write them off and replace versus deal with repairs more than the ‘value’ of older trucks.

Its a definite problem and i wonder when the dam will break and everything will just go to gas. At this point my emission choked diesel truck is still more efficient than my girlfriends V10 truck. The oil changes are more expensive, the fuel filters are more expensive and I have to buy DEF too. I have a feeling if I made a spreadsheet on the 2 trucks the cost to operate isn't as far apart as it seems. There is more to it than just cost though.

The gas may not cost much more to operate but the reduced range of a tank of fuel is a huge annoyance. There is a place we go to horse shows in PA several times a year and with the trailer full behind the V10 we have to get gas right before we cross the state line or we won't make it clear to the show. With the same trailer on my truck we make it to the show, drop the trailer and drive back and forth to the hotel at least one day without having to get any fuel. I know some folks who travel more remote stretches and the V10 truck probably wouldn't get them from one gas station to the next on one tank full when its working hard.

Tractors and construction equipment have gone down the same shit hole. I am helping out about once a week at a friends horse farm dragging arenas and what not because her usual guy is recovering from a heart attack. She has a 3 year old John Deere 5075E tractor. It has a damn DPF on it. Today when I started it a light on the dash lit up that looked like a regen symbol with a thermometer on it. I had no idea what it meant and assumed the filter was cleaning. After a half hour of pulling a box scraper with the shanks down at PTO speed the tractor cut rpms about 100, then lit up a giant red stop sign on the dash and shut itself off with alarms screaming.

So I made a call to a friend that is more familiar with the newer john deere tractors and he didn't know what was going on. On a whim I checked the fuel tank and found it empty. The damn fuel gauge doesn't work.

I put fuel in, re primed the filter, and it fired back up and ran. The stupid light stayed on the whole time and the smoke stack was screaming hot the whole time. I left the tractor running while I put the loader back on. Then hooked up the spreader and emptied it and the light remained on the whole damn time.

I got home and looked up the meaning of the light, and it was to let me know the exhaust system was up to temp for a proper cleaning. So I think the tractor was in a regen, and didn't manage to finish in the hour I had it running. They only use it to pull a spreader through the barn most days and it runs in 2 minute increments. It will probably still be trying to do a friggin regen next week when I go back. I'm not even sure you can buy a 75 horsepower gas powered tractor anymore so wtf is a guy supposed to do that needs a mid sized tractor but runs it in short increments with light loads 90 percent of the time?
