Default This is different...................

Take: 2 old engine blocks, 2 pieces of pipe, 4 import bearings, some steel plate and a $69 crossfeed table.

Add 2 hours of machine shop work and a few minutes of welding, drill a whole bunch of holes and end up with an accurate metal lathe (with an up to 2 1/2" spindle bore) that also end and horizontal mills, drills or bores in 3 or 4 ways, chop saws, surface grinds, spins and can be a cheap and rigid CNC platform with all these functions.

Sounds interesting but they're awful proud of the video at $40 a pop. And no multimedia available? I'll pass, they sound like snake oil saleman.

Yeah I made a corporate jet out of an old bathtub and two cans of Aqua Net, with only 2 hours machine shop work! Buy my video for $39.95!!!

Where do I send the money? Beats the old fashioned way I've been doing it, working on those Lears/Falcons/Gulfstreams/Hawkers/etc.

Whats bad is this guy is only about 45 minutes away from my house, and I don't even want to go look at it.

Default A for effort

D- for making a useful tool. I'll stick with my old 10" logan and beat up 1/2" drill press. Engine blocks should either have pistons in them or bottles!

This is reminiscent of the creative DIY machines that were spawned at the close of WWII, using pipe fittings, auto axles, anything that could be salvaged. With a little elbow grease this kind of equipment can function a s well or better than anything factory made. If I had time on my hands and didn't already have a machine shop full of equipment, I wouldn't hesitate to engage such a project, just for nostalgic value; to show that you can still beat the system....

I checked out G.A. Ewen's photobucket album and I'd say he's in the same league as Franz and Cary. It seems the above is based on his design. Here's a little more info on the original.

There's also a yahoo group on the new one, though it's a little sparse at the moment.
