Default 40th wedding anniversary trivet

I have been a smithing fool these days.. Funny how I have really been enjoying myself.. Kind of a resurgence or rebirth of sorts..

Anyhow one of my customers/ friends invited Susan and myself to a 40th wedding anniversary and well I figured a little project from me might do the trick as the Husband is a Jeweler.

Started out with 1/8 X 1/2.. there are 3 ways to make this type.. The best way would have been to make this in a left and right side then weld them together in the middle this allows for the most manipulation of the metal without a weld being in the way while forging it..

2. is to start at the hearts bum and weld it hear first then pull it around and into shape.. The hearts bum is the hardest area to get the right shape so working from here makes it easier and it is the strongest weld joint..

3. start from the hearts tip end. Which is what I did.. It is pretty hard to hold everything just so, take a welding heat then move it very quickly to the anvil to get a tack weld and then take another heat to finish it up.. Lots of stress on such a small weld..

So there it is..

I counter twisted some 1/4" sq then flattened it out and this is what i used for the handle.. Ideally I could have brought the ends of the heart bum bars to be welded to the sides of the heart.. This would make a slightly better design but i really didn't want to get to over taxed with all the welding stuff..

Thanks guys.

I know the Husband and my buddy Doreen will really appreciate it.. Probably end up being a wall decoration but that's okay to. It's the thought and feelings behind it that count..
