Default Looking for a spring thingy

I am looking for a torsional spring that has a housing that will return a lever to center when turned 1/4 turn either direction. I am having trouble finding something to fit the bill, as I don't really know what to call it. I have built some, but they are labor intensive. Essentially it is a disk with two upright posts, a torsion spring, then another slightly smaller disk with two downward posts. When turned either direction one of the posts on the smaller disk grabs the torsion spring and when the lever is released the spring returns it to center. Anybody know what to call it, or where to fin it? BTW, about 2" around and the spring tension would be measure in inch pounds, with the spring being roughly .040 and having 3-4 turns.

Like a baroom door hinge ?

Or the hinges on the kitchen door ?

IIRC a 2-way hinge ?

Not really. If you've looked inside a door handle it is the same basic mechanism that returns the handle. I'm sure it has a name, like a Johnson Centering Retractor or something.

Shade, that looks like a compression spring to me, not torsion.

I know what you want so I'll try to explain, wind a spring say 5 turns, then take about 2"s that are straight and bend out to a 90° turn spring over and repeat, now you should have 2 legs sticking straight out right next to each other, now put a pin in between the legs near the coil. Now the part that you want to return to start has a pin that is between the legs but further out , when you turn the part it will spread the legs when you let go it returns, TADA.

Andy, could you just take the spring out of say maybe, a Kwikset entry lock?
They're cheap enough.
How strong does it need to be?

Andy, the keyword is "self-centering".

Looking on the web all I found in my quick 5 min's of looking was those that could/would close ball valves etc once opened mechanically. Or momentary positioners that would return to center.

I would imagine that some site that features obscure lab/electronics/robotics used/salvaged parts etc etc would probably have something you could use.

Here is a pic of the door handles that I just made. You can see the washer with the legs. There is the handle post that comes up through the middle, then the spring goes around it. The top part was actually robbed from a lock set. The problem is that I had to do it 12 times, and now have orders for more. The Schlage lock set were the only ones that would work (easy to rob from). The parts are so thin that they are difficult to attach though, they tend to disappear when tigging them in place. I used the spring too, though it was a bit light. I had to get these out in 3 days and it was close.
I am waiting for the pic to show up in my mailbox. I sent them from my phone but it seems slow tonight. I will post them up tomorrow.
