Nothing wrong with wood. I've been using it since I was a teenager. Only got into metal to build fixtures for the woodwork but once there found it more interesting/challenging , so it offers a good starting place.

When my kids and I got involved with the FIRST ROBOTICS program, our first year team was poor and all we had was the high school wood shop and parents to make things. Our first 'bot was mostly made of plywood. Even the drive wheels were wood, with some rubber mat stapled on for tread.

Another parent mentor's old Dad said to him "You made a f'ing robot out of wood?!"

We did better and better each year, but always had at least 1 little piece of wood on the 'bot. Our motto was "wood is good". My older son even made a sign for our Team 975 out of cedar siding with the lettering "975 featuring W-Fiber". You know, the organic, biodegradable crap that grows on trees.

We finally won a Motorola quality award for one of our last 'bots. Still have it - like this:

Edit: My young one went on from wood shop to welding and machining. He's now the lead man at the machining department at his work, the foreman I guess. Runs a big Okuma machine and they just got two big 4 axis Haas machines for him this week. He does most of the programming in the place now.

We still have the nice little wood stool he made out of poplar.

Very nice! If we did more routering, I'd probably have a table like that.
