Screw log splitter mod

My screw log splitter was used on my (sold) Farrmall H. Now mounting it on my Massey 1100, I find the PTO shaft to be too short. So I find out the slip joint is not square tube but rectangular tube. It is 1" by 1 1/16" ID. Of course I do not have any. The old tube was pretty shot and was welded up years ago. It was also only 1/16" wall so the new longer tube is 1/8" wall. Had to make a 1/16" shim for one side.

After all was done I has to test it out, so split 4 rounds. Every thing working as it should.

Thanks digr. The PTO is a 540 rpm and the tractor motor is only turning just above idle going into a 4 speed truck tranny in reverse gear, so the screw turns pretty slow. No risk of shaft vibration being a hair out of line with the shim. Going slow is just right for me at my age.

Nice repair mod. I’ve seen those screw type before, and they must work, but how easy does it start into the log? Would a table on the back help hold the log so all you have to do is push it on to start?

Or upon closer look, it looks like it has a blade to help keep the wood from turning as it screws on? The wood cart is blocking the picture of the splitter end.

Nice fix. I'm in the middle of repairing/upgrading mine now (mine is a conventional hydraulic type).

I have one of those. It has a bar that stops the wood from spinning.It is too slow to be dangerous. Works well. Bought it like new at a tractor show for 40 bucks.

I think I would not shim it, I would replace the whole tube assembly.
I recently made one up and had no material for the sliding tubes so I went to the JD dealer and they had a 9 ft length for $200 bucks. I went to Case dealer and they cut me off what I wanted for $25.

At PTO speeds there is no concerns for vibration. I have 4 speeds on my pto and have driven it at 250 and as high as 1000 rpm with no vibration. At a severe angle you will be getting vibration from the U joints protesting.

Here is a pic of the screw. The wood is split with it standing vertical. You can see the table now.

I have used the hydraulic type but it would need a 40 ton to split some of my big rounds. The screw is much more efficient I believe.

This one turns at 60 RPM (best guess) so a shim should be fine for what little I use it. My tubes were greased after modification.

I haven't met anything mine can't split - at an idle, but that doesn't mean it isn't out there. That being said, you for sure have me beat in the pricing department!
