Yes, the parent metal is from inventory. I scored(?) over a ton of scrap steel from an upgrade at the fertilizer plant I drove for this spring. Free for the hauling. A varied assortment of grating, safety railing, ladders, old obsolete ladder cages, and assorted detritus from around the plant. Being a fertilizer plant, corrosion is a fact of life. Not ideal, but free. And I got paid to cut it down, load it, and haul it home with the company truck and trailer.

It is nasty stuff, but the majority of the rust cleans off with a knotted wire wheel on an angle grinder.

If you haven't tried this type of disc I highly recommend it. I tried one just yesterday to remove some paint and rust and it worked great. I would recommend trying not to grind the edge of a plate, it'll just eat it up. But flat areas and pipe, etc. - awesome.

Those do work well, but they sure don't last long.

I like the knotted wire wheels. Not too expensive and pretty good at general cleanup and slag removal. The only thing I don't like about them is some start to shed wire in use. I have removed several wires harpooned into mÿ skin from them.
