Default WhiteTrash Firewood Basket

One of my ambitions for the forksnatch is to use it to shuttle my little dabs of firewood from the trailer to splitter to my backporch. I am tired of wheelbarrows, being both lazy and generally inclined to finding the easy way of doing things.

1. So I had this old 4 wheel dollie thing that I bought a couple of years ago from the same guy I got the Whiteboy from originally. All 4 casters swivel & it has an adequate angle iron frame. I bought it for 10 bucks just for the casters and it has been in my way ever since so I thought, "why not a rolling pallet?". I don't need it for anything else & if I change my mind, it will still double for use as just a dolly.

2. So I made some sort of fork extensions for the little forklift. There are a pair of inserts that slide into the forks, then inside these white tubing sockets. I cut them at 45° to match the ends of the forks.

3. Then I welded them to the underside of the dolly.

4. A few months ago one of my neighbors dragged a bent cheap-assed futon or bedframe or something out to the alley. Naturally, I dragged it down to my place and salvaged the tubing. I made a backstop out of this piece; the other major piece was bent pretty badly so I used it for ends as you will see later. This stuff is thin wall & very light weight, which is what I had in mind.

5. So I cut the first piece down to size to make the back part of the playpen.

That is going to be a nice firewood basket,Cutter. Attachments for the Forksnatch could be endless as time goes on and he will continue to serve you well around the back forty. I agree with leaving the casters on to allow other uses of the same pallet/dolly/basket. Forksnatch will turn in to a swiss army knife for you! Press on my friend.

1. Then I cut some 2 inch stubs from an old ceiling fan hanger pipe that just happened to fit snugly inside the black tubing; this is so I could weld it back together with .035 wire & my limited skills - burn-through city otherwise.

2. I cut some 1/2 inch pipe stubs about 3 inches long & bolted them to the carefully measured & marked corners of the dolly. The backstop fits over the back pair. The fit here is a little bit sloppy but that's ok - they're just to keep the the thing from sliding around.

3. So the back part looks like this. I just slips down over the little pipe posts

4. I bolted a piece of angle iron vertically to each end of the backstop & welded 2 pieces of the ceiling fan pipe in the appropriate spots (top & bottom) for them to line up with the cut ends of the side frames. Sorry - fuzzy picture. I think you will get the idea when you see the final assembly.

5. Then I welded some additional support into the dolly frame and tacked in the only useful piece of expanded metal that I had on hand.

So finally, the whole thing just sort of snaps together & only weighs 30 or 40 pounds. I can use it with or without the playpen to move whatever junk that happens to need moving without adding too much weight to the load.

I spotted a little dab of firewood scattered around a dumpster down the alley the other day when I took the Kohler out for it's first test spin & had hoped to go snag it today but alas, it was nearly dark before I finished this thing.
Maybe I can field test it tomorrow sometime.

Cutter,

The picture is getting clearer and clearer, the forksnatch, is nothing more than a tool for you to rape and pillage, yours and surrounding neighborhoods of all unattached and undocumented wood.

Well thanks, guys. I forgot to mention that one reason I was glad to use up that old bedframe was to get it out of my way, same as the dolly. I made it so easy to take down so it can all hang on the fence somewhere when I don't need it.
And my total cost on it besides a few bolts, electricity & consumables is the ten bucks I paid for the dolly to begin with. Every thing else was scrap that I scavenged here & there. My kind of project for sure.

Thumbs up

Very Cool!! Another use is as a scaffold…you can lift someone up to change the light bulbs in your shop and they will even have handrail to hold on to.
