Default Ford 6.2 Gas motor known issues?

Might be doing some bartering with a friend that has a 2011 F250 with the 6.2 Gas engine. Currently the truck is parked, and he said it sound like it was knocking. From what I can see, a common issue is broken valve springs. I'll have to look at the truck, and decide. Is it as simple as just replacing the valve springs with new replacements? Or will I have to pull the heads? Does broken valve springs also wreck the valve seats? I see a few used complete engines, but they also mention they need valve springs. I thought the 6.2 had a decent reputation. Anyone here with experience on this motor?

Edit: he says 162k miles on it

Read about Cam Phasers before you go too far. I am not well versed on the 6.2 but I believe it uses the phasers and they can be noisy until oil pressure is up, but eventually they go bad and it is a major undertaking to change them.

Personally, I would not touch it with a 10Ft pole unless it is damn near a giveaway. Just my 2 cents

The 6.2's that I've driven were better in every way than the old 5.4 but I don't know how many miles they are good for before things get expensive.

Wont take much to buy it, prob 2k or less, he wants it gone.

Yeah been reading on the cam phasers. Also the intake runners, as sources of knocking. Complicated.

Be nice if it was a simple fix, and it'd be a truck I could use since I somehow broke the ZF6 transmission in my other 7.3 truck.

$2000 if the body is good is pretty much a give away.

Are you going to do the work yourself?

If the springs are broke, you should pull the heads and inspect for bent valves and piston damage.

Know of the phaser issues on the 5.4 and 6.2, I would replace that and the timing chains and refresh the engine. But for a couple grand in parts your time and the initial purchase you would have a good truck.

With those phasers 5k oil changes with a "synthetic" engine oil would be highly recommended. That system is very sensitive to oil condition.

Also will your buddy let you pull the valve covers and inspect for broken springs or dropped valves before buying.

And I moved the thread.

He probably would let me, but I don't want to work on it where it's at. It's about 3 hrs from me and it's just a pain to bring my tools and work in the dirt.

Yeah might as well do the timing chains while in there. Hoping to avoid removing the heads at first, perhaps an inspection camera through the spark plug holes? But will start with the valve covers and look for broken springs. Prob do a compression test as well.

Yes, I'll be doing the work. I'm not the quickest but don't mind tearing in. The body is still presentable but the underside has gotten some rust from being driven on dirt roads then sitting for 3 yrs on dirt due to this knocking issue. It was also a former oil field truck, part of a fleet. It is just a work truck.

Some other people have thrown some parts at it, plugs, coils, wires, etc. And maybe a few sensors, but have not torn into the engine, ie. the valve covers and front timing cover.

For what he's wanting, I don't think I can go wrong. Worst case, part it out.

Kind of Like us. We kept having field failures on 8 lug wheels but only in mine operations in Canada . We figured the 3/4 ton was being loaded as a class4 .
