I would get this one This would be 38.34 pounds plus shipping for the 100mm size. Chinese shipping is slow but cheap. I searched for a backing plate, and it appears 1" x 8 is the common size and found nothing for a 1.5 x 8 You would have to make your own, but you have a lathe so no big deal.

The shipping from China to europe has gone nuts over the last few years, that would cost 75 CAD to ship here.
But there's loads of chinamen in europe. they bring in container loads and then re-ship cheaply within europe. The lathe actually came with a spare blank backplate so that bit's at least semi covered 3 or 4 jaw though? I need to invest in a dial gauge too. I have one for years, but when I got it couldnt understand the size of the box. Dial gauges come in some pretty small sizes ![]() |

Once you start chucking square, rectangular or sawed off chunks, time to get a 4jaw if the faceplate can't handle it.

Played around with some of the lumps of HSS that came with it and finally managed to take some cuts with a decent surface finish so it was reassuring to prove to myself that the machine is capable of good work. I just need to develop the skills to reproduce it.
Have something daft to do in a few days. Need to narrow a bearing race by 15/32. Don't have a toolpost grinder. Don't fancy trying to cut it with the lathe. Will likely just spin it by hand to cut it roughly to size with the grinder and then maybe try to finish it under power. The bearing width doesn't look to need to be mad accurate, it has some slop on the shaft so this should work. |

Cover your ways if you are grinding something in your chuck.

This steel is very brittle, if you do succeed in making a chip, make sure you have eye protection. Spin by hand held against a grinder wheel, holding it at an angle to the stone, so it drives the bearing as well as cuts at an angle across the race.

When I said finish it under power I meant with the lathe spinning. but still with the grinder. Damm bearing is still in France with UPS. First one went to the UK and got stuck in UPSs system for a few weeks. really hoping this comes tomorrow as I want to hire a mini digger at the weekend but no point if I don't have the tractor back together!! |

The jaws look like they are reversible to me.

![]() Me too, but they don't seem to want to go in when reversed And looking at the threads on the underside of the jaws they are ground with a bit of a taper on the first thread to ease them in but the last thread doesn't have the same taper. |
