Galvanize

I've known people that have built BBQ pits out of galvanized tank materials.
I personally have told them about the dangers that lurks there.
Most of them make the remark...ain't nobody got sick yet!!!!

I'd like to take this time to thank those that keep this site up and running and thanks to all those that contribute to it.
Knowledge is a great tool of life and thanks to sites like this sometimes that knowledge can save a life.

Franz, sorry for you loss....but your post will help those that don't think some things are not dangerous, but when given time and circumstance, they are in fact deadly.

sorry for the loss of your friend ,i too have cut and welded alot of galvanized pipe ,i just thought it would make you sick,just drink some milk .i had no idea if could be deadly. thanks for posting franz.

Sorry to hear of your friend's passing.

What are your recommendations IF someone MUST weld or cut on something that's galvanized? (how to safely remove the galvanizing, exposure protection, etc. ?)

Sorry to hear about the loss

So to learn from other peoples mistakes, what is the right way to get galvanize coating off ? Just grind them down ? I would hate for others to suffer from something like this

Really hate to hear of this fellow's passing. I've burned galvanize off pipe myself, but never knew it was so dangerous. Thank you for posting the danger of it.

Another thing I,ve seen a lot of people do is grain metal without a mask over thier mouth and nose. All that metal dust is going in thier lungs. John.

I too thought you could just drink some buttermilk to get rid of the metal fever. I actualy was welding some casters to a galvinized A/C air handler for the welding school I go to. The teacher didnt warn us at all about the galvinize. I have heard about it befor so i held my breath while welding it. But it seems you can possibly get it from skin contact? This is realy scary.. Does anyone know if its cumulative? Or if it works its way out of your system in time?
