Custom coat hook finished
I posted about welding intake and exhaust valves a few days ago and said it was for a coat hook. Well I got the coat hook finished and I thought some of you might like to see it.
I may need to repaint it though..... Backstory: About a month ago I was walking around my FIL's pole barn and he was trying to give away some of his stuff since he's trying to slowly clean it out. He had these valve covers sitting on a shelf and said "These are from a 1959 Ford Y-Block, I'd like to sandblast them, paint them grey, and hang them on the wall someday." I "think" he said grey.... I knew his birthday was coming up so I thought I'd take care of that little project for him. He calls his place "Thunder Road Garage" He has a big crankshaft mailbox with his logo on it, another big "Thunder Road Garage" sign on the front of the pole barn, even one of his old Ford trucks has the logo on the doors. He's big into 50's Ford trucks. I found the correct valve cover stickers online but I won't stick them on until he's ok with the color. They are just sitting on there right now. His pole barn is red so I used red for the vinyl decal at the top. Valve cover art valve cover coat hook Last edited by Scratch; 06-28-2022 at 04:55 PM. |

What was the original color of the covers? The grey looks good, though and if "original-ish" I would slap those stickers on and give it to him with your interpretation. That funky valve head is messing with my OCD but I suppose it won't matter as it will be covered with a coat...
Was that the name of his garage back in the day?

It's hard to tell what the original color was, they were in pretty rough shape when I took them. I know he has a truck that he painted the engine "Ford Gray" so it is possible that was the original color. The only reason I went with gray is because he mentioned it... I hope he did... the details of that day are still a little fuzzy for some reason.
He never actually had a "garage" business back in the day. He's just always been into restoring old trucks, guitars, and the hillbilly life. Here are some pics of his trucks and the man himself. Happy 76th birthday today! |

Nice looking coat hangers, Scratch. Tell him it he doesn't like the color another old guy has already spoken for them, and I'll pay the freight
