Jet Drill Press

Hi Guys,
My name is Steve and I'm a newbie. I have a Jet drill press JDP-17MF and I'm
going to put it on a Shop Fox mobile base D2057A. My Q. is I need to hoist the
Press up with my engine cherry picker. I have a sling for it but will the head be ok
to hoist from or the table arm at the post. I'm thinking of dropping the base of the drill press off + the table too, to help with total Wt. With the base off I'll be able to bolt it up to the plywood and the mobile base. I have been thinking about this and it would be great to have more info from you guys.

Carefully use a strap around the head and lift you should be fine.

yep, But if the belt guard is plastic be "more careful" not to damage it.

What they said above... Keep in mind it is top heavy to begin with and will become even more so once you remove the base. Do you not have anyone to help you lift it or lower it? 2 men ought to be able to handle it. How about just laying it on its side to put the base on? PS: block up the casting so you don't bend the belt cover.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for writing your thoughts on my problem. I won't be hoisting the DP till
next week. I don't have anyone to help me, so just me. I understand how the
press is very top heavy and more so w/o the base. I also thought about the cover getting ding from the sling. I thinking of using some blocks to keep the
strap from getting the cover. I need to do a couple of dry runs on the mobile
base to see which way I want it. I'll let you guys know how it coming along.

On the subject of tippiness, that base is adjustable in size - if it were me, unless I was REALLY tight on floor space I would keep the base FULL SIZE, get a piece of 3/4" plywood, cut it to fit the base, bolt it to the base, then CENTER the DP on the plywood and thru-bolt the DP base to the ply.

It doesn't take a lot of base increase to make a noticeable difference on something as tall and spindly as a DP... Steve

I'll agree, and steel plate (as the extra weight will add more ballast) would be a
better option than plywood. 1/4" plate as a minimum, the thicker the better. If
you have the tools to cut and drill the plate.

And then pile whatever heavy stuff you can onto that, sandbags, scrap metal, to add to the ballast.

Sand bags work good but can spring unintended leaks. I used 80# bags of Quikcrete.....once in place, punch a few hole in the bag and keep a wet towel on the bag for a few days. It'll stay put.
