![]() This machine was prompted by another project that I may share later. I needed a way to create a gentle curve in 18 gauge sheet steel. My original plan was to use a buck to wrap the sheet over but I could not easily find anything available. In addition I realized this 18 gauge sheet is the same width as the large roll of 11 gauge steel I bought from the scrap yard a few years ago. I decided to make a machine that would also be able to straighten the 11 gauge steel as it comes off the roll with a significant curve.

Almost all the pieces for this machine came from the scrap yard. I had ordered three pieces of 3” x1/2” DOM tube but later that week I found the tube at the scrap yard so I canceled the order. This saved me $200. The only part I purchased from my supplier is the 5/8” CRS round bar.

I found the thread https://www.shopfloortalk.com/forums...t=50144&page=2 I started several years ago for the roll of steel but the pictures are gone. I have been using this steel for various parts. I have been able to straighten smaller pieces by various means but large pieces have been outsourced to a shop with a roller.

Here I am making new threaded holes in the pillow block bearings. I am using a piece of angle as a fixture.
The footprint for these was too large so I will cut the mounting ears off and screw into the bearings from the underside. These bearings were found at the scrap yard. There were nine of them, all brand new.

These are the six spindles that will be inserted into the ends of the tubes. These will have a slip fit and secured with four 5/16” set screws on each. The 2 1/2” round CRS bar and the 24 set screws were had from the scrap yard.

Here I am making 5/16-24 threaded holes on the ends of 3” x 1/4” wall DOM tubing. The four holes on each end are arranged in pairs 90 degrees from each other. To accomplish this I clamped a section of channel to the tube. With the flat of the channel I was able to index the tube in the vise.
I initially ordered DOM tubing from my supplier. However as luck would have it, I found and bought numerous 1.5”, 2” And 3” tube at the scrap yard A few days later so I cancelled the order.

Well fellows, I’ll add more later. I’m off to see what is under the Christmas tree this Saturday morning.
I found this Greenard no.3 last Saturday, it weighs over 200 pounds. It cost about $25.
