MAP-Pro Propylene and MAPP Cylinder RECALL!!!

Dr Bob jogged my mind on this topic I have been meaning to post for a while.

Worthington Cylinders is voluntarily recalling its MAP-Pro, Propylene and MAPP cylinders sold before January 15, 2012. Cylinders were sold as replacement fuel and in torch kits in the US and Canada under brand names including Worthington, Rothenberger, TurboTorch, Magna, Lenox, Ace, BernzOmatic, Uniweld, Craftsman, Goss, Super Ego, Castolin, Nevax, Bromic, Uniweld, Ameriflame, Hotery, GoSystem and Turner.

Issue
The cylinder may leak after a torch or other device is disconnected from the cylinder. If the leak is large enough or if the gas is permitted to accumulate in an enclosed area and there is a source of ignition, a fire could occur. There are no known incidents of fire or injury associated with this issue. Worthington is undertaking this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution.

Here is the instruction on how to safely handle them.

If you have a 14.1 oz MAP-Pro, Propylene or 16 oz MAPP cylinder sold in the US or CAN before January 15, 2012, then please follow the following instructions for disposal and replacement. Click here for instructions for countries outside the US and Canada.

UNUSED CYLINDER

If the cylinder has never been connected to a torch or other device, do not use cylinder. Return cylinder to store where it was purchased for exchange or full refund.

PARTIALLY USED CYLINDER

Cylinder currently connected to a torch or other device...
Do not disconnect torch or other device. Take outdoors. Ignite the torch and burn off the entire contents of the cylinder. *Disconnect torch from empty cylinder. Dispose of empty cylinder per cylinder label instructions or return it to the store where it was purchased for exchange or a full refund.

Cylinder is not connected to a torch or other device now...
Take cylinder outdoors. Leak test top of the cylinder with soapy water.
- If bubbles develop, attach torch. Ignite torch and burn off entire contents of the cylinder. *Remove torch from empty cylinder.
Dispose of empty cylinder per cylinder label instructions or return it to the store where it was purchased for exchange or a full
refund.
- If no bubbles develop, do not use cylinder. Return it to the store where it was purchased for exchange or a full refund.

*NEVER LEAVE LIT TORCH AND CYLINDER UNATTENDED. USE TORCH ONLY IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA.

IMPORTANT

A new 14.1 oz MAP-Pro product is currently being manufactured. New cylinders are marked with a black or white diamond on the cylinder shoulder.

Don't empty your new style ones.


Now everybody should go get the old empty of near empty cyclinders and take them in and get a brand new full one. It's for safety - think of the children

I have a full and a 1/4 full ones going back soon.

These little gas cylinder are dangerous.I have seen one come thru the wall of a burning house.It went out of sight trailing smoke.Keep these little bombs out of your house.The big cylinders on houses can blast off.When I was on the fire dept I used to disconnect those and roll them away from burning buildings.Glad Im too old for that now.

This reminds me of the safety instructions should you break a compact florescent bulb. They are toxic enough that you must call EPA and have a hazardous waste cleanup and evacuate and ventilate the shack for a week.

Yes, I have found that every single propane Bernzomatic or whatever cylinder will leak down after you remove the torch, and by putting my ear to the spud I can hear it hissing. That has been going on for 20 years. I expect it has caused a fire or two.

So I never take the torch off a bottle once it is installed til the thing is dry.

Was I supposed to save the receipt? How can I possibly remember which "big box" store I bought the cylinder from? How do I identify cylinders from Worthington; or are all MAPP cylinders manufactured by them?

I have three MAPP cylinders, two are really old, painted yellow and one is larger also painted yellow. Will Lowes replace all of them even without a receipt?

I believe they all were made by Worthington. It's a safety recall and thus retailers might bend their normal procedures.
