I bought this trailer fender from tractor supply company but it is 4 inches wider than what I need.
I’m gonna cut a four-inch strip out of the middle, tack it back together with the strip underneath and seam weld it back together. I do not know if my nibbler can cut this so I may end up doing it with a cut off wheel in the angle head grinder. But here’s my quandry, what’s gonna happen to this fender from entrained stresses when I split it down the middle. Is it going to stay straight? Is it going to turn into two opposite hand 3D bananas? Is it gonna go all out of round at the cut edge, while the flanged edge stays round ? Something else? |

I think it will distort a bit. Depends on how hot you get it if you use the cut off wheel. You will get to practice your blacksmithing skills to get it back into shape, but it should conform back easily with enough clamps.

I don’t think it will move much, the outer radii will have enough strength to hold the curve.

Once I cut 4 inches out of the middle I will have two 2 inch edges to weld back together. That fender has a 1” radius so there’s only gonna be about one inch of flat metal.
I think I’m gonna need a leather body bag, a shrinking hammer, and an English wheel. |

It will be fine. welding will be the issue.

The question is what is it going to do after cutting?
Since all metals are not equal it is difficult to predict. Even parts made from the same sheet will have a different outcome if the orientation is different. Experience you may have had in the past may not apply in the future.

I’ve run out of wall space and I had to hang my new bicycle tools on the back of the shed door. I was working on my new bicycle until the 00:45 hours and I took it for a ride at 01:00. I’ve been dicking with this all week so it’s nice to get it down off the rack. At 1 AM our neighborhood is about as silent as a tomb. |

Wow. My neighbourhood is like that by 8-9 pm most days. I try to be an exception when I can though. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
