Question What's It Do? 12v Starter Thingy...

What's It Do? 12v Starter Thingy...

This came in an auction lot I picked up last year. I forgot I had it until recently when I re-arranged/cleaned my shop. About 9" OAL and 3" wide. Model plane starter? Or what? What is the V-belt groove for? I'm pretty sure I hooked it to a battery and it spun by pressing the switch on top.

UPDATE: yup, RC plane starter--fits on the nose cone on the prop. But what is the V-groove for?

Looks like one for the little racing carts as well may do both RC planes and the 2stroke racing alcohol cars.

The V grove is for cars or engines that need a belt. I had an RC gas car that had a belt accessible through the roll cage always loose around the engine pulley. You just pulled the belt up, tight against the pulley of the engine, put the starter in that loop and bumped the starter to start the engine.
Once started, the belt would just fall back down loose never touching the spinning pulley of the engine, but always ready to be used again.

I would guess the "V" groove is just a left over from using a pulley as a shaft adaptor.

The pulley and nose cone cup are machined as one and held on to the shaft (threaded at the end) by a nut. The nose cone thingy is a rubbery silicone thing and pops right out of the cup.
