Default Near Miss with compressor

I had to change some parts on my compressor the other day. As I was resetting idle speed and full load mixture I noticed something in my peripheral vision but dismissed it as a bug or something. After I shut down the compressor I noticed my flywheel guard missing a chunk. This is on a Kohler K series engine with a flywheel guard that spins with the flywheel outside of the sheet metal housing. I then realized that the piece pictured is what flew by my face. It is a 14 gauge or so perf with a band around the outside. The troubling part is that the breaks are all bright, no rust.Click image for larger version

That would've felt good at any angle.

Yeah, You're lucky. I had something similar happen to me back in '81
It cut my face up pretty bad.

Got both my lips cut in two, sliced off a one-inch piece of my chin almost to the bone and sort of wrapped the side of my throat missing my juggler by a 16th of an inch is what the doctor said, while they were sewing me back up...

I'm pretty sure my wife still has that piece of SS fan blade she put a date on it just being an ass I'm sure... and gave it to me so it would be a reminder.

I threw it away but she found it and kept it. heck she is weird she even wanted to pickle the chunk of my chin they found a couple of days later...
although I think she was kidding about that... haven't found a pickle jar with it since 1980 thank god...

So, I'd say your dam, lucky! I'm glad you didn't get hurt, man...

Glad it missed you. I’m sure you are going to put a different type guard that does not spin on this time.

That screen is part of the motor you can remove it and watch all those big fins on the flywheel go round then add a stationary guard to keep fingers out.

I had a SS flex fan grenade during a hot run. It took out the shroud ,rad, and made visible dints in the hood.

That is what did the dance on my face and neck. A 5x6" piece of SS flex fan, It was sharp enough to give me a super close shave...
I have the one spot on my chin, I never have to worry about whiskers not that I can grow much more than a shallow T, anyway...

They make m out of flexible plastic know, I'm sure you could find one to mod to fit... Or, fab one out that covers the flywheel cover that won't need to be spinning.
