Default Are their any US vans left?

I watch the occasional van build on youtube and something dawned on me today......

Have european vans completely replaced domestic designs?

The only USDM van I can think of is ironically made by a japanese company, the nissan NV is as far as I know a north american only model, but the transit, sprinter and promaster are all european designs.

Have we finally found something that we are actually better at?

You can still get a Ford E-350/450 as a cutaway chassis.

Ahhh, knew I'd forgotton one.

They don't have something themselves in Europe to bring over. 99% sure their european models are designed by renault/nissan and just rebadged.

They're actually given up on europe, they've sold opel/vauxhall to peugeot.

In a word, yes. You still see new Ford and Chevy vans but the European and Japanese offerings are becoming more prevalent all the time. They're better built and get better mileage than the North American offerings.

There are several places near us that do van conversions for commercial purposes and if you look in their yards you always have to hunt for the Chevs and Fords. The Transits, NVs and Sprinters, on the other hand, are all over the place.

Another place where Europe has North America beat is in rail transportation. Compared to Europe we're mostly in the Dark Ages over here. Some cities have developed good local transit systems but there are relatively few of them and most are not as well developed as they could be. Long distance rail travel is not much more than a joke on most of the continent...

We have put to much faith in the Highway and airport as a means on transit . This has allowed rail to deteriorate . High speed 150-250 mph rail service is a dream . The St. Louis to Kansas City would be faster with check in times figured .

Nothing wrong with highway or airline travel. They are important parts of a blended transportation system--we just need to include rail in the mix as well. Even though I'm an avid railfan I'm not sure if rail is the best method of travel for longer trips. If you're going 1000+ miles it pretty much a certainty that flying will be faster. On the other hand there are many 300-400 mile corridors in the States and Canada where downtown to downtown rail travel would be as fast or faster than flying. For whatever reason we just don't seem to have the will in North America to develop them...

I think that’s a big part of the difference in North America versus Europe. Our population density is much lower, and the distances are often much farther.

Southern Ontario is, relatively speaking, likely the most densely populated area in Canada. It’s 450 kms from Toronto to Ottawa. 5 hours to drive it, 4.5 hours for rail, or to fly is about an hour, and usually about $100.

The volume isn’t there to justify high speed rail, so we’ve gone to flights instead for commercial transportation.

Edmonton to Ottawa is about 3500 kms. Flight is about $200-250, and takes 4 hours.

Passenger rail in North America just isn’t feasible anymore due to the distances.
