Surface grinder

So I went and picked up new surface grinder today. Not sure why I actually bought it, other than all the wheels that came with it. Can’t say I really have a need for it, other than I have been collecting tools and machines so I can say I can build anything I want in my home shop. Guess I could be spending my money in worst ways.

Here are the pictures. I need to do a purge of shop, so I can make room for these last couple tool acquisitions this summer. So it will be wrapped up and stored outside for a bit.

Keep those wheels dry, and pack them up better, if they crack, they are dangerous.

I see it still has the oil pump wired in to the rear of the column, that pump is about $500 alone, just so you’re aware.

That’s a nice unit if still in good shape, with the 6x18” chuck. Does it have a rack to move the table left and right, or is it a cable setup?

Don’t move the table or slides unless absolutely necessary as it is, these grinders run on a thin film of oil on both slides. Without that pump in the back of the column supplying oil, and they are moved, it will scratch and score the ways.

What suggestions would you have for packing wheels better?

I was thinking of making some wood boxes, and standing wheels on edge, with a 1/8” piece of plywood ( Lu-Ann)?? As spacers between each wheel. That way I can look and see profile.


Or would they be better stacked flat with plywood between them?



I am not sure if it is a rack, or cable setup. Right now, I have it covered in plastic, and set into a harbor freights portable garage for storage til I can purge some more out of the pole barn.

For shipping they usually just have them in cardboard, but with a piece of cardboard between to prevent contact with each other.

It doesn’t need to be fancy, just to prevent them from hitting each other, or any other things, but especially hard, sharp or sharp edge objects. And avoid them getting wet as well.

I’ve seen wood with a dowel used to hang them, you could also do the same to sit them on shelves.

Most of mine are simply stacked laying on each other, in places where they won’t get knocked over or around.

As an idea, those blue Norton wheels, depending on the exact compound, ran around $30-40 per wheel here about 4 years ago. As long as they are stored well, they’ll keep indefinitely.
